Young man at the station

With a bag packed full of his fears

He didn’t know where he was going

He was just running from the years

He made one last call to his old man

Before he was ready to roam

He said, “You don’t got no reason to worry, pa,

I’ll be fine on my own”

And he told him,

I didn’t mean to disappoint you, pa

I was just tryin to get you to hear

I didn’t mean to disappoint you

I was just tryin to get outta here

Molly, with her red dress

She was the talk of the town

We’ll, Johnny, he was going to have her

Didn’t bother askin, didn’t want to get turned down

She wasn’t going to have the child

Of the man who had taken her pride

But her mamma, she was a good old girl

Wouldn’t look her in the eye

And she told her,

I didn’t mean to disappoint you, ma

I was just tryin to get you to hear

I didn’t mean to disappoint you

I was just tryin to get outta here

And we all want to help somebody else

And we we can all hear you cryin out for help

Sometimes, it’s so loud

We can’t hear ourselves

His parents went down to the coroner

They said they could ID that boy with their help

You see, the 27 people he’d gunned down had died

Before he turned the gun on himself

His momma sat there and held his hands

She brushed his hair from his brow

And with a bloodstained finger she wiped away tears

And said, “Boy, your at peace now.”

And they told him,

We didn’t mean to disappoint you, son

We were just tryin to get you to hear

We didn’t mean to disappoint you

We were just tryin to get you outta here

And we all want to help somebody else

And we can all hear you cryin out for help

Sometimes, it’s so loud

We can’t hear ourselves.
